The Basics of Backgammon Game Plans – Part Two

As we dicussed in the previous article, Backgammon is a casino game of skill and pure luck. The goal is to shift your chips safely around the board to your inside board and at the same time your opposing player moves their chips toward their inside board in the opposite direction. With opposing player chips moving in opposite directions there is going to be conflict and the need for specific strategies at particular instances. Here are the last 2 Backgammon tactics to complete your game.

The Priming Game Plan

If the purpose of the blocking strategy is to hamper the opponents ability to shift her checkers, the Priming Game plan is to completely barricade any activity of the opponent by assembling a prime – ideally 6 points in a row. The competitor’s checkers will either get bumped, or result a damaged position if she at all tries to leave the wall. The ambush of the prime can be built anywhere between point 2 and point eleven in your board. As soon as you’ve successfully assembled the prime to stop the movement of your competitor, the competitor doesn’t even get a chance to roll the dice, that means you move your pieces and toss the dice again. You’ll win the game for sure.

The Back Game Tactic

The objectives of the Back Game tactic and the Blocking Game tactic are similar – to harm your opponent’s positions with hope to improve your chances of succeeding, however the Back Game technique utilizes different tactics to achieve that. The Back Game plan is generally used when you’re far behind your competitor. To compete in Backgammon with this plan, you have to hold 2 or more points in table, and to hit a blot (a single checker) late in the game. This technique is more challenging than others to use in Backgammon because it requires careful movement of your chips and how the chips are moved is partly the result of the dice toss.
