The Basics of Backgammon Game Plans – Part 1

The objective of a Backgammon game is to move your pieces around the game board and bear those pieces off the board quicker than your challenger who works just as hard to achieve the same buthowever they move in the opposing direction. Succeeding in a round in Backgammon requires both tactics and luck. How far you can move your pieces is up to the numbers from tossing a pair of dice, and just how you shift your checkers are determined by your overall playing plans. Players use different strategies in the different stages of a game based on your positions and opponent’s.

The Running Game Tactic

The aim of the Running Game tactic is to bring all your chips into your inner board and bear them off as fast as you can. This technique concentrates on the speed of shifting your chips with absolutely no efforts to hit or barricade your opponent’s checkers. The ideal scenario to employ this tactic is when you think you might be able to shift your own chips quicker than your opposition does: when 1) you have a fewer checkers on the game board; 2) all your pieces have past your competitor’s checkers; or 3) the opposing player doesn’t employ the hitting or blocking plan.

The Blocking Game Tactic

The main goal of the blocking tactic, by its title, is to stop your opponent’s chips, temporarily, not worrying about shifting your pieces quickly. After you have established the blockage for the competitor’s movement with a few checkers, you can shift your other chips rapidly from the game board. You will need to also have a good plan when to extract and shift the chips that you used for blocking. The game becomes interesting when your opponent utilizes the same blocking tactic.
